Philanthropy
Powell Home is committed to taking care of three key constituencies — our family, our clients and our community. Our goal is to establish mutually beneficial and lasting relationships. As such, we are committed to sharing our profitability each quarter:

Scholarships
We will contribute $1000 per year toward scholarships for local high school students who desire and deserve the opportunity to attend the college of their choice. Our focus is to encourage young students to become strong, smart and bold in their adult lives through higher education. Powell Home helps these students through financial and non-financial initiatives.

Habitat for Humanity
We are blessed to work with generous, loving and affluent homeowners every day. While we debate the design merits of blinds vs. shutters, thousands of American families are unable to find a decent place to live at a price they can afford to pay. We believe low-income families deserve decent, affordable housing. We will contribute $1000 per year to Habitat for Humanity. The Powell family will also commit the time and labor to assist in the building of Habitat homes in our community. And while we don’t pride ourselves on making mistakes with our clients, mistakes sometimes happen. Every mis-measured blind, shutter or window treatment that cannot be used in our client’s home is donated to the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store in Newport News.

The Animal Aid Society
Our private-label custom upholstery line is named after our two rescue dogs, Freddie and Murphy. Both were on the euthanasia list at their respective shelters when they were found and adopted by Janice and Tommy Powell. These dogs bring love and joy to our clients, our vendors, our mailman and delivery drivers every day. There are thousands of no-kill shelters all over the country, but we’re particularly fond of the work done by the volunteers at the Animal Aid Society in Hampton, VA. We will contribute $1000 each year to the Hampton Animal Aid Society.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
St. Jude is unlike any other pediatric treatment and research facility anywhere. Discoveries made at St. Jude’s have completely changed how the world treats children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. No one pays for treatment beyond what is covered by insurance, and those without insurance are never asked to pay. All patients accepted for treatment at St. Jude are treated without regard to the family’s ability to pay. When Janice Powell was a young girl, she was devoted to the television sitcom, “That Girl”. Marlo Thomas, in character as Ann Marie, was her idol, a liberated and spirited woman living in a fabulous Manhattan apartment. Marlo Thomas is still an inspiration to Janice; although now in her role as the National Outreach Director for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Powell Home will contribute $1000 each year to the “Country Cares for St. Jude’s” radiothon.
