For more than 50 years, the Powell family has shared a wonderful relationship
with generations of loyal families on the Virginia Peninsula. From its
humble beginnings as Parker-Powell Furniture to it’s independence
as Powell Furniture, families from Williamsburg to Hampton trusted the
Powell family to provide the best selection of furniture fashions, values
and brand names.
In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s the nation’s retail world changed with the onslaught of “big-box” discounters offering ridiculously low-priced products and financing programs. Many small, independently owned businesses including bookstores, hardware stores, grocery stores, pharmacies and furniture stores found they couldn’t compete with the massive buying power of national chain stores.
With increased competition and the pending retirement of the Powell family matriarch Betty Powell, the decision was made to close Powell Furniture in 1995. Since that time, Betty has enjoyed her retirement and keeps busy with her bridge club, sorority sisters, church and volunteer commitments. Tommy Powell’s wanderlust took him to the high seas as a sport-fishing and yacht captain traveling from the Chesapeake Bay to the Bahamas, Exumas, Turks & Caicos, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Bonaire, Aruba, Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Mexico.
He married Janice in 2000. Janice Powell had always dreamed of opening a store that would allow her to share her love of family, home, decorating and interior design. For five years she was an independent sales representative for a Hampton VA based plantation shutter manufacturer. There, she gained invaluable knowledge of the shutter and window treatment industry. She learned how to measure, install, trouble-shoot and service her client base. Her passion for independence led her and Tommy to the decision to open Powell Home.
Basing
their decision on the importance of building a business that would follow
the model of the customer-service and family values that made Powell Furniture
a success, Powell Home was born. On some days, you’ll find Betty
and Tommy on the sales floor at Powell Home; greeting clients and offering
kind words of advice and support on your decorating choices. Janice and
her sales associate Vera Horne recognize the importance in carrying on
the Powell family name.
